Changwon Selected for the AX Demonstration Industrial Complex Project

Changwon City has been selected for the AX Demonstration Industrial Complex Project, a core initiative of the Ministry of Trade and Industry's Smart Green Industrial Complex promotion program, setting the Changwon National Industrial Complex on course to become a national hub for AI-driven manufacturing innovation.

With Changwon City's final selection for the "AX Demonstration Industrial Complex Project," a core initiative of the Ministry of Trade and Industry's Smart Green Industrial Complex promotion program, the Changwon National Industrial Complex has begun its transformation in earnest into a national hub for AI-driven manufacturing innovation.

The city will invest KRW 22.2 billion through 2028 to build a flagship AX model that upgrades its machinery- and defense-centered manufacturing base with AI.

The project is carried out by a large consortium centered on the Ministry, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, and Changwon City, joined by three demand-side companies — Doosan Enerbility, Hyundai WIA, and Samhyun — and ten solution companies.

Building on the large-scale manufacturing data held by the Changwon National Industrial Complex, the city plans to establish demonstration factories and extend them to SMEs and mid-tier companies, with the goal of raising the AX transformation rate across the entire complex to 30% or more.

Doosan Enerbility will run a demonstration that applies AI models to its gas turbine assembly process, predicting and tracking the progress of roughly 40,000 parts in real time. This will shorten assembly lead time by 20%, and autonomous mobile quality-inspection robots will be deployed to automate inspection procedures.

Hyundai WIA will demonstrate a model that combines a digital twin-based integrated control system with autonomous robotic logistics to raise productivity by 20%. Samhyun aims to reduce its false-defect rate by 8% by applying an AI-based integrated data analysis system.

The city will link these demonstration models with the AX Lab and the "AX Comprehensive Support Center" so that companies located in the complex can experience real-world operation and validate technology transitions based on dummy data. At the same time, it plans to remove the initial investment burden and AI adoption barriers companies face through diagnosis, consulting, and demand-matching programs, thereby raising real transformation outcomes.

In particular, the city plans to formulate an "AX Master Plan" based on an analysis of AI demand and infrastructure within the complex to refine its long-term manufacturing innovation strategy. Acting Mayor Jang Geum-yong said, "The AI Factory project and the AX diffusion model will be a turning point that drives innovation in Changwon's flagship industries," adding, "We will build an ecosystem that leaps forward as a physical AI industrial complex."

Meanwhile, the city is strengthening cooperation with the central government and Gyeongsangnam-do Province so that the "AI-Collaborative LAM Global Demonstration Project," to be pursued at a scale of KRW 1 trillion starting next year, can move forward in earnest at the Changwon National Industrial Complex and the Digital Masan Free Trade Zone.
