The Benefits of an Industrial Data Platform

An industrial data platform delivers a range of benefits, including unified data, actionable insights, and optimized business strategies and processes.

There are several benefits to using an industrial data platform. These include:

  1. Unified data: On a data platform, data is consolidated in one place in the cloud. This consolidation means every database can use the same services to deliver insights and suggest business strategies and process optimizations.

  2. Improved access: Because data assets are kept with a single service provider and use the same analytics engine, users can access data quickly and easily on the production floor. The value of HMIs, mobile tablets, phones, and PCs means decisions are faster and more data-driven.

  3. Valuable applications: Because data operations are layered within the platform, users get access to custom reporting and real-time KPIs. They can also zoom in to view a specific machine and spindle, or zoom out to view plant-wide performance.

  4. Operational improvements: Real-time analysis of machine conditions can lead to new strategies within management, as well as enable automation. For example, a predictive maintenance program that uses actual machine performance and conditions can significantly lower maintenance costs and reduce downtime.

  5. Higher security: Many companies put security at risk with ad hoc and fragmented IoT devices and software. A unified solution means that even if IoT devices lack complete security, the data platform can largely manage security through authentication and device authorization. This lowers the risk of a successful attack.

  6. Cost reduction: Because IoT devices and deep data analytics use real-time monitoring, many processes can be automated or semi-automated. This automation reduces labor and unlocks capacity, reduces the number of variables and manual tests needed for quality inspection, and optimizes maintenance strategies. A platform with a unified solution leads to process optimization, higher productivity, and less waste.

How impactful will industrial data platforms be?

It is estimated that more than 175 zettabytes of usable data will be created by 2025. Industrial data platforms will not just be impactful. They will also be essential. Many industries with unique data and analytics requirements generate shared data. Today, most manufacturers rely on legacy MES and ERP systems to manage operations, but these solutions struggle with data collection. We can expect this market to change quickly as larger players attempt to add solutions that support device connectivity and new entrants offer point solutions for minimal tracking.
